Dealing with a Messy, Unorganized Studio

How did it get this way? Four years ago, I moved into my studio. It looked pretty clean then. My interests and artistic pursuits have changed and accumulated in that time. Every surface is covered with piles of papers, books, mail, postcards and/or projects.

In one corner, piles of magazines, boxes and rolls of paper await some form of order.

The other end of the desk...

The work table top...

My plan is to work a few hours a day so it's not so overwhelming to deal with the piles. Decisions need to be made on what to purge so room can be made for new interests and art supplies. This whole process is making me rethink my artwork priorities- what is really important and what
can I let go. Does anyone else have this problem? How do you deal with it?

  1. Oh definitely! A very little at a time is how I deal with it. Better yet borrow my best girlfriend who is an absolute organization neat freak. She always tells me her very best present is the Brother Label Maker I gave her. Happy organizing...

  2. Best of luck to you Paula, I have the same problem. I don't deal with it well. It paralysis me and I sit and ponder the problem much of the time. My sister is helpful when she comes to town but that is not often enough.

  3. It's scary how much some of my piles look like your piles. It's hard to figure out some sort of sensible system for keeping the paper corraled; it's hard to toss perfectly good art supplies; it's hard to work in overwhelming clutter. Tackling the mess can be done 2 ways... put everything else aside and work on the studio till it's done, or set an alarm and work for a desiginated time each day till it's done. I usually choose the latter because the clearing out always ignites my creativity and I MUST WORK.

  4. Thank for sharing the delightful disarray of your studio! What a great way to tackle it, a few hours a day. I can't wait to see the AFTER photos!

  5. Don't even want to give my opinion, one time I had a friend help me and she put away things I can't find yet, so do your best little by little.

  6. Thanks for all of your ideas and support. I see that I'm not alone in the struggle to keep studio chaos to a manageable amount. My new motto is "out with the old, in with the new". Clearing space to create will help me to get going on 2011 projects.

  7. I have a hard time purging. I would rather "tub it" until someday. (lol, yes, I can still park in my garage...)

Organization is an art, too. One I have yet to master, even a little. I have been rearranging my studio this week and it is a real challenge. It is like stuffing 20lbs of potatoes into a 10lb bag. ;)

    Good luck!
    Donna :)
