Pino Pie Day at Apifera Farm

Today, Cynthia took me out to Apifera Farm near Yamhill for Pino Pie Day, a fund raiser for organizations that help senior and needy barnyard animals.  Katherine Dunn, farm owner, artist and illustrator, adopts many barn animals in need.  She's facing the camera, wearing a hat and holding the donkey lead in the photo below.
Pino the donkey grazes in the grass.  Katherine and Pino used to deliver pies.  Now, folks come to visit her farm, the animals and eat pie.  Darn, I didn't get a photo of the pies.  She baked 18 pies for this celebration.  I want the recipe for the walnut pie.

A lavender sachet and some cards that I bought with Katherine's artwork...

Check out Katherine's blog HERE for more information about her farm, art and animal rescue efforts.  Her book, Creative Illustration Workshop, is one of my favorite art books.  She's also started an online class this month.

Sounds like a great time, Paula. I just discovered Katherine Dunn on the way to our last retreat ... we stopped at Akamai and her book leapt off the shelf at me. I was smitten with her use of colour and composition ~ so different from my own! And then just a few days ago I was leafing though some old issues of Utne reader (contemplating cutting them up for collage - gasp!) and I turned the page and there was one of her amazing illustrations - I knew it without even reading who the artist was. I always think that People Who Publish Art Books live remote unvisitable lives (I should know better by now!), but it is especially lovely that she rescues goats and bakes pies. I like her even more now. :)

Thanks, Pen, for your comments. You'd love Katherine's farm. This sanctuary is her dream come true.
